Title: P-40B/C 1/24 (FINISHED AT LAST!!!!)
Post by: Alex Kontiveis on May 10, 2008, 02:35:30 AM
Hi guys,
I'm building a high detailed P-40B museum quality model, and i miss images or drawings for B/C type gunbays and ammunition loaders and anything for these areas. I've got stuff enough for E-K types but no pictures at all for P-40B. I cant find nowhere something could help me to build the gun bays on the wings.

Also a good cutaway for P-40B would be a gift for me.

Thank you

If you haven't already, you might want to look into Squadron/Signal's book "P-40 Warhawk in Detail and Scale, Pt.1."  This book covers the P-40 through the B/C models.  I don't have this book but have Pt.2, which covers the later models and has numerous photographs and drawings, including the gunbays for the .50 caliber wing guns.  There's a good chance that Pt.1 has the same for the wing .30 calibers found on the early P-40s.

Good luck!

Mark

I 've spent about two year' s trying to get a good handle on the P40 B wing guns arrangement. There really very little to see but most of the info out there on the wing gun bay set up on the early P40 wing is way wrong.

If you can wait a week or so I’m prepping a small detail article on the early P40 with a lot of new detail info for one of the modeling sites  …it will include a very basic wing gun layout with the correct one and two gun wing setup

It might not  be the level of detail your hoping for but it will be better then what you commonly find and correct a lot of misinformation.

Alex,

That is beautiful work!  What scale is it?

By the way, nice website you have there with some outstanding builds on it.  When I have more time I'll check it out more thoroughly.  Thanks for the link!

TNX Mark,

the scale is 1/24, and its the total re-build of the Kenneth Tailor's plane from Vintage F.S. Everything is made by metal. I use the Kit for a scale-guide. It will be scratched from the beginning, all of it.

That’s great looking work, especially in metal.  Would love to see your technique sometime.

I hope you have a good set of plans to go by as well as the VFS model, that model was their first attempt and it was rife with errors, virtually nothing escaped.  Part of it came from them using other models that they enlarged and they copied no mistakes like the terribly shallow Trumpeter cockpit, other parts came because they were planning on also making these “toy like” as they thought they would appeal to kids (at the prices these things go for?) which is why the wing is too thick, it was supposed to have retractable landing gear and in order to keep the landing gear scale they needed to make the wing thicker.

Just thought I’d let you know in can you are unaware of its shortcomings. They have changed the way they do some things on their next model that has come out is fairly accurate. Just wish this one could have been, I would love to have had a 1/24 P-40.

Dear Admin,

On this kit, VFS made a terrible mistake. I can understand the absence of experience, but placing the floor 2 cm higher of the wing surface is a crime!!! I saw the pre-production kit of p-47 and i have to admit that nothing seems to remind me the VFS of the P40! The surface is great and the detail is much better!!!

The images I posted here, show the floor before test fit on the fuselage!!! I was socked!!!, as soon as I realized that the floor was 1 inch higher!!! (I trusted the VFS). I didn't expect such a mistake! So I destroyed everything and I'm building it from the beginning!!

Wait for its progress because you r gonna see a different Kit!

If you want I can post the progress here, as far as i do at HELMO.

My techniques can be seen at my recent article in LSP, concerning a Dora. Into the article exists a link to a forum Helmo Thread. Everything step by step!

Yeah, just about everything on the model has a mistake unfortunately.  From the canopy to the fin is to flat.

Please, post your progress photos as you go, would love to see them.  That’s a lot of work to scrap, and that the new interior will look even better.  If you can find any aluminum to make the seat out of, you wouldn’t need to paint it as they were just left bare aluminum.

I used to be on the staff of LSP for six years, I’ll have to go check your model out.

For the seat I cant use NM aluminum. Its hard enough to work on, making the engraved details. I use copper, a soft material. Anyway, painted with Alclad the final result is very natural!

The kit will be used as i have already told you as a guideline. I'm building also an Arado 196 in 1/24 scratched also.

So... as soon as i restore my progress in a few days, I will post new images concerning the interior of the fuselage.

Cheers
Alex.

Hey Alex

I just wanted to give you a heads up on the seat and seat mount, if you’re doing a US P40 then the seat and seat mount is correct

However, the RAF and AVG aircraft they used a different seat and seat mount setup setup (the seat is the same as the first RAF Mustangs)

My article should appear in the next few days on over on Hyperscale… I go over the different seats the wing gun setup and other things

Yes, I'm building the old and pure Kenneth Taylor's plane! US Army.

I already know the differences between AVG's and US Army P-40Bs. Thank u for your interest. I appreciate it.

Alex.

PS: I'm working on fuselage interior, tail details. I will be late for new images.

Dear Mark and p-40 boys,

The work so far, is only the 3% of the total result. Be patient. Many surprises will boost your interest.

I'm a Mechanical engineer...and engines are always my babies!!!

The cockpit is lowered (i trusted Vintage and I messed up). I was socked when my floor was 1" higher the wing!!!
I had to rebuild all the floor and backside from the beginning, thats why I was late.

(http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/3876/floordownfh6.th.jpg) (http://img154.imageshack.us/my.php?image=floordownfh6.jpg) (http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/7615/dsc02621tj9.th.jpg) (http://img372.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc02621tj9.jpg)

Here are the Cockpit's side walls

(http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/931/dsc02879wa7.th.jpg) (http://img80.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc02879wa7.jpg) (http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/3843/dsc02894zf2.th.jpg) (http://img208.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc02894zf2.jpg)

and the cockpit area in a dry fit test before assembled....

Of course nothing of Vintage Kit is used so far (except the 2 halfs of the fuselage). Everything you see is scratched.

The whole construction is dedicated to you guys!! For all of you who love this bird!

cheers
Alex

I noticed the wrong usual drawings of the gunbays panels on wing top!! I couldn't understand if the drawings were correct or not compared to real pictures...

Great guideline for everybody who wants to be accurate!!!

Thank you guys,

Here is my next update

RUDDER

The VFS P-40's Rudder is a disaster! I had no choice. Make a new one. Filling the rudder with putty, is not the best thing you can do, but it is the only way to make it seems like a rudder. I decided to build it from the beginning.

Here is the VFS rudder and beside at right the plastic sheet i used.

(http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/3876/dsc03136zs1.th.jpg) (http://img294.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03136zs1.jpg)

10 thin evergreen rods were placed on the surface. I sand them enough.

(http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/2267/dsc03137go7.th.jpg) (http://img214.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03137go7.jpg)

Next step...Cast Vinyl wrapping, and aluminum

(http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/1986/dsc03138he1.th.jpg) (http://img294.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03138he1.jpg)

After 2 days of work on metal, i managed to give the shapes. Surfacer covered the rudder.

(http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/1430/dsc03140jx8.th.jpg) (http://img237.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03140jx8.jpg)

and READY....

ELEVATORS & AILERONS

By the same way I built the rudder, elevators and ailerons were constructed easily.

For the tail wings, I used aluminum foil, and copper. Its a very difficult procedure because I had to place its time a riveted panel by panel. The result is very realistic, and all the plane will be wrapped by the same way!

NEXT PART concerns the fuselage finishing.

Τhank you Mark, I appreciate it. I'm glad you like it. Any comments or detections are welcome always. Don't hesitate for something wrong during the project.

PS. Where can i find an original picture (black n white) of the specific plane? (Taylor's or G. Welch??) or the ACCURATE PROFILE of this?

Here comes the final part of Section -01-

FUSELAGE'S FINAL CONSTRUCTION

At first I decided to rebuild the instrument panel. Once again, I was not pleased using Eduard's Bezels, so I followed my method, for sure.

Aluminum sheet, laminated instrument panel's print out etc.

(http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/2589/dsc03245ow5.th.jpg) (http://img527.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03245ow5.jpg)

The final result. I think its much better than previous one.

My next step concerns the inspection side door. According to real images, using Aluminum and copper the result is this one:

(http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/4879/dsc03286vt7.th.jpg) (http://img524.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03286vt7.jpg) (http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/8857/dsc03342lu1.th.jpg) (http://img505.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03342lu1.jpg)

Finishing with these small items, I made a new windscreen and its basement from the beginning. A difficult construction. But after a few days of hard work the result is better than I expected.

(http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/4979/dsc03345yf0.th.jpg) (http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03345yf0.jpg) (http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/5388/dsc03276ug2.th.jpg) (http://img525.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03276ug2.jpg)

After that, I finished with my new Canopy. I decided to open the left urgent window. I added the central top nerve on the canopy (is missing from Vintage's canopy)

(http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/6905/dsc03279bg7.th.jpg) (http://img301.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03279bg7.jpg) (http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/4333/dsc03280qb0.th.jpg) (http://img505.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03280qb0.jpg)

A new firewall was necessary. Look the Kit's one....

(http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/3169/dsc03308kq1.th.jpg) (http://img244.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03308kq1.jpg) (http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/9114/dsc03317ju5.th.jpg) (http://img242.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03317ju5.jpg) (http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/220/dsc03321gd3.th.jpg) (http://img525.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03321gd3.jpg)

As far as you Know, the Kit has no riveted fuselage, many main lines are missing.
According to some serious profiles, I riveted ALL the fuselage panel by panel, wrapping her with aluminum foil.

Some extra details are added such a new fuel riveted tank, Fuel caps etc.

SECTION B' wings

Part -01/B-

WHEEL WELLS

Lets start today from the wheel wells.

The first thing i did, was a 2mm of raising of the main wheel wall. (only the inner side).

Here you can see the cuttings of the gun bays, and the modification of the wheel wells.

Thanks Mark. I'm so glad you like it. Lets move...

LANDING GEARS (basic built)

These pictures show the main landing gears. Hand made everything from stainless steel, copper and aluminum

Hard work but the result is quite good for me. I spent 4 days of making them.

WING'S CONSTRUCTION

Here we are my friends. Lets begin with the weighted wheels

Vintage, gives the wheels in rubber. This is my procedure for making them weighted

(http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9898/dsc03436ci1.th.jpg) (http://img522.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03436ci1.jpg) (http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/1890/dsc03432sp9.th.jpg) (http://img507.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03432sp9.jpg) (http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/884/dsc03438nh2.th.jpg) (http://img518.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03438nh2.jpg) (http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/5570/dsc03586ih4.th.jpg) (http://img93.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03586ih4.jpg)

Next step were the Flaps.

I used the PE set of Cammett Ltd...Excellent and accurate!

(http://img367.imageshack.us/img367/7641/dsc03446jt4.th.jpg) (http://img367.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03446jt4.jpg) (http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/1206/dsc03447xq2.th.jpg) (http://img366.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03447xq2.jpg) (http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/6545/dsc03449pu5.th.jpg) (http://img375.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03449pu5.jpg) (http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/8020/dsc03451xm4.th.jpg) (http://img146.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03451xm4.jpg)

Next comes the Left Gun-bay structure. I didn't payed attention on this part, because the open panels are to small for any detail observation inside.

(http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/7798/dsc03452bq5.th.jpg) (http://img507.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03452bq5.jpg)

After 4 weeks of wrapping, i completed the wing's dress. I will never try it again....

(http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/7704/dsc03511mf7.th.jpg) (http://img403.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03511mf7.jpg) (http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/7104/dsc03543ab6.th.jpg) (http://img300.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03543ab6.jpg) (http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/9875/dsc03540dh0.th.jpg) (http://img296.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03540dh0.jpg) (http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/4456/dsc03544vl8.th.jpg) (http://img80.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03544vl8.jpg)

I added all the caps and panels are shown. and the missing Landing light of course...

(http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/7156/dsc03580en9.th.jpg) (http://img337.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03580en9.jpg) (http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/7038/dsc03575gu7.th.jpg) (http://img263.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03575gu7.jpg) (http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/9048/dsc03571eb0.th.jpg) (http://img337.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03571eb0.jpg) (http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/401/dsc03567hh8.th.jpg) (http://img93.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03567hh8.jpg)

(http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/2982/dsc03562pg4.th.jpg) (http://img511.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03562pg4.jpg) (http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/3280/dsc03560ki9.th.jpg) (http://img93.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03560ki9.jpg)(http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/9020/dsc03565jw8.th.jpg) (http://img263.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03565jw8.jpg)

This is the most difficult part of the wing's wrapping. The exterior wheel's wells.

(http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/3851/dsc03574ex3.th.jpg) (http://img518.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03574ex3.jpg)

Here we finished the second Section.

Next coming the 3rd section concerning my Favorite part of my modeling... The engine!!!!

Hope you like it so far.

SECTION C' (ALLISON THEORY)

part-01/C

the first approach

Hi Guys,
This is my newest update concerning the Allison 1710.
I bought the Scale Caliber's one from Cammett Ltd, which highly represents the real engine 99% accurate shape and details. Although VFS's Allison consists of many parts and looks very impressive when is built, Is not correct. So i used the only choice were available and really worths the money i spent.

Looking at the pictures bellow (the first one comes from Cammett's site) you may see a detailed resin main body and its compartments. Some parts, such us propellers, engine holds, etc are cast metal.

(http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/2977/alissonpe9.th.jpg) (http://img505.imageshack.us/my.php?image=alissonpe9.jpg) (http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/7829/dsc03596kw0.th.jpg) (http://img266.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03596kw0.jpg) (http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/5017/dsc03598ej4.th.jpg) (http://img503.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03598ej4.jpg)

I began by adding some elements according to the real one, such us the spinner's back frame holds etc

(http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/8175/dsc03601zy8.th.jpg) (http://img266.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03601zy8.jpg) (http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/6254/dsc03599uj7.th.jpg) (http://img410.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03599uj7.jpg)

Surfaced and i paint it with N. Grey, and Light grey.

My next step concerns the Overhead camshaft (OHC) valve train configurations place the camshaft within the cylinder heads, above the combustion chambers

Ι cut off the valve train's cover and i lowered it 1 mm. I made all the valve train with alluminum(0,9mm fat), steel, clock bevels

WORKING AREA:  3cm Χ 0,8cm

(http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/4153/dsc03657wh9.th.jpg) (http://img266.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03657wh9.jpg) (http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/6662/dsc03660aj1.th.jpg) (http://img505.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03660aj1.jpg) (http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/3305/dsc03661rm3.th.jpg) (http://img248.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03661rm3.jpg) (http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/4135/dsc03663wi4.th.jpg) (http://img247.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc03663wi4.jpg)

TNX, hope for a new update soon

Cheers,
Alex.

MAIN BODY)

Due to previous steps we saw the basic modifications at Front casing και Rear casing.

Before I go on, I would say that the Scale Caliber's Allison, is very good. Accurate dimensions and shape, and MUCH better than VFS one!!! RECOMMENDED!!!!

Alex,

I see what you meant at the beginning of this build that engines are your expertise, for what you've done to the Allison engine is unbelievable!  I wasn't aware that an aftermarket Allison was available for the kit, but it might be something I need to look into when I get around to building my VFS Tomahawk...which won't have nearly the detail as yours!

Yes. I recommend it!!! Its a very accurate 1710-33 copy compared to VFS one...But a P40 expert will discover many faults on Scale Caliber's Allison. There is no any other choice...Thank you Mark.

Part-03-

PORT & STARBOARD new Bearers

Here, you may see the Bearers. I wasn't so pleased with Scale Caliber's quality on this part. So I decided to make new ones, more accurate.

I used Aluminum and steel tubes, evergreen. 3 days were need for them. Epoxy glue is used.

OIL COOLERS

Once again, any after-market improvement becomes feckless compared to human handmade abilities.

A pen tube was used for the 3 barrels bodies. (the lowest oil cooler has smaller channel). Copper, used for dressing them. Evergreen for their holdings. Tamiya mask tape for their seal curtains.

COWL FLAPS

The system is composed of 53 pieces. Aluminum sheet, steel, evergreen were used for the building.

Great detail on the engine!  This whole model is coming along great.  A massive improvement over the kit!

Both Brian and Rodney had given me the link to your site, but I lost the link, could you post it here please?
