Title: The Kittyhawk I/Ia Canopy
Post by: Raptor on February 27, 2012, 04:35:32 AM
Hi guys

I'm new to the site, so hello to everyone from over here in the UK, and thanks Brad for getting me on so smoothly.

I've just started a 1/32 model of an RAF Kittyhawk Ia from 112 (Shark) Squadron in the North African theatre in 1942, based on the Hasegawa kit. I have been trying to find out a few little odd details; one thing I am interested in was how the pilot opened and closed the canopy when he was actually sitting in the plane. Were there any internal handles, levers or catches that could be pulled on or operated actually attached to the inside of the canopy?

This is probably an easy one for all you P-40 buffs, but I just cannot find any photos showing anything and cannot find anything on the site (though I've probably looked in the wrong places, of course!). Any help, links, references or photos you can suggest would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Robin.

There is a hand crank on the right side just under the windscreen they could use to close it.
As for opening it, I think they might just push it back.
