Title: P-40E in North Africa
Post by: mebucko on December 20, 2018, 03:13:20 AM
Hello!
I know most P-40s in North Africa during 1942-1943 were "F"s, but were there any "E"s assigned there?
Thanks, and Cheers!
Bill

The British and Commonwealth had plenty of P-40E (Kittyhawk MkIa) in North Africa.

Thanks, Vince_M! I really appreciate your reply!
I have previously built Nicky Barr's aircraft (what a hero!)
Do you know if there were any P-40Es in US markings?
Thanks again, and Cheers!
Bill

Bill,

That is a good question.  I cannot think of any US P-40E in the desert war.
It seems by that time they were sending over P-40K and P-40F.

Thanks!
I just bought the Trumpeter P-40F, in spite of a lot of bad comments on different sites. I might be sorry, but I didn't want to do the conversion, even if I could find one.
My aim is to do a "well-worn"  desert P-40, with a yellow surround insignias and American flags on the fuselage and wings.
Thanks again and Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Cheers,
Bill

Hi Bill,

Vince is right; no P-40Es saw service with US units in the Mediterranean, although the commonwealth units flew pretty much every variant of the P-40. 450 Sqn RAAF flew the Kittyhawk up until VE day.

Make sure you let us know what you think of the Trumpeter kit once you receive it, and a Merry Christmas to you too!

Mark

Thanks, Mark!
I did receive it, and it looks good in the box! I am no expert, but the quality looks very good.
As to what as some have said - that the nose is too pointy and the cowling is the wrong shape - I don't have that knowledge. I still have not seen any reviews.
I am just going to have fun with the build (as Floyd Werner  wisely advises!)
Happy New Year to All!
Cheers,
Bill

Yes, building models should be fun so don't worry about it.
We have a P-40 Model area so why not show us your work as you go?

Thank you, Mark!
If it  turns out to be "photographable" I will do that.
I plan to do a "What if", that will be  a "One and Only".
Thanks and have a great week!
