You should be able to find what you are looking for under P-40's Today, scroll down to P-40N, you could also look under Restoration, you could also look under Models, Builds and then scroll down to P-40N.
Looking pretty good so far, I never would have thought of trying that! I would have to pull my drawings out, but I believe the rear of the fuselage is shaped a little differently between the early variants and the later variants. I will look for some of my drawings and then I will lay one over the other and then post them here so you can see any differences, I hope that will help. What did you use to build the nose up?
Yeah, just about everything on the model has a mistake unfortunately. From the canopy to the fin is to flat.
Please, post your progress photos as you go, would love to see them. That’s a lot of work to scrap, and that the new interior will look even better. If you can find any aluminum to make the seat out of, you wouldn’t need to paint it as they were just left bare aluminum.
I used to be on the staff of LSP for six years, I’ll have to go check your model out.
That’s great looking work, especially in metal. Would love to see your technique sometime.
I hope you have a good set of plans to go by as well as the VFS model, that model was their first attempt and it was rife with errors, virtually nothing escaped. Part of it came from them using other models that they enlarged and they copied no mistakes like the terribly shallow Trumpeter cockpit, other parts came because they were planning on also making these “toy like” as they thought they would appeal to kids (at the prices these things go for?) which is why the wing is too thick, it was supposed to have retractable landing gear and in order to keep the landing gear scale they needed to make the wing thicker.
Just thought I’d let you know in can you are unaware of its shortcomings. They have changed the way they do some things on their next model that has come out is fairly accurate. Just wish this one could have been, I would love to have had a 1/24 P-40.
I don’t have most of my Air Classics anymore, but each year they would have some pretty good coverage of Reno, usually in their December or January issue. You could look on ebay for some of the Reno issues, they usually had some pretty good photos in them.
Welcome aboard! When I was first going to start this site in 2002, I put the word out for information, I wasn’t expecting very much and thought it would just trickle in over a long period, I was pretty shocked when I was swamped with information but I am very happy to get it and I am constantly amazed by the traffic the site gets. The release of several new models has helped, I just hope they release some in 1/32 some time.
Great job on Stockys plane! There’s probably more about him on the site now than any pilot, there is Brian Cauchi’s 1/32 model along with some historical photos and a little bit on him under Art.
I am building this kit right now, I enter the point of needing to paint the cockpit and put it into the fuselage so I can glue the wing on. I didn’t have too much problems with the cowls, but I used to some slow setting glue and kept working them in position until they dried, gluing some plastic strips behind it first might make it a little easier. I only have one or two slight mold bulges, I was just going to lightly take my file to it. When I test fit the wing to the fuselage, there was a pretty good size gap by the trailing edge which everyone seems to run into, I will just glue some plastic into the gap and file it smooth and scribe it if necessary. Here are links to really good build articles on the kit, they have some good suggestions on building it. The second one is a K, but it is the E kit with a resin tail. Feel free to post photos of your progress.
After your e-mail, one place I thought of that you could contact would be the Air Force museum, they might have some of the information you’re looking for. I don’t have their contact information, but it shouldn’t be hard to find on the net.
