I'm new to the group and am interested in the P-40 Warhawk stationed at Hamilton Field for training.
I'm local to the Bay Area and work at Travis AFB.
I've dived into the
http://www.aviationarchaeology.com/src/AFrptsMO.htm website and noticed all the training accidents and started to compile a list. I remember going to the last Hamilton AFB Open House in 1975, have a few pictures!
On researching thru the internet, I've seen mostly accounts of the WW2 dogfights, flying & wartime experiences, but not much on the training, crashes or personal accounts from Hamilton Airfield.
I was at the Nut Tree Airport 10 years ago or less at Duncan Millers hanger and had some conversation with a pilot from that era and said he crashed a P-40 into San Pablo Bay, wondering did the military retrieve the airframes from the water or mud?
Can we find a P-40 or parts of one out there preserved in the mudflats?
I'm interested at least to get involved with the Pre-WW2 and early 40's training at Hamilton Airfield and then the transition into the P-38 Lightnings that started training there before moving up to the Santa Rosa AAF.
Hope someone could open my eyes to that era! Thanks, Mac
