Excellent!

I have one of those Mauve kits in my stash...I think it's a P-40N.
You are inspiring me to build it!  I have the decals for "Lope's Hope".
I think I have a photoetch canopy rail set for that kit.

Keep photos coming!!!!

Your results are spectacular!

One thing I'm trying to figure out is how to make the decals look faded too.
Do you overspray with gray while they are off the model?

Mark,

One thing bad about the 1/72 Hasegawa Kittyhawk is that the exhausts are too high.  It's almost as if the guy designing it thought he was doing a P-40B.  Anyway they are too high by about the width of the opening for the exhausts.  So I just filed them off and filled the gap with putty.  Then I had to carve a new hole on each side.  You can see in my show off thread where it looks much better and more accurate.
One other fault is at the wing root fairing in the front.  They appear to have forgotten about the extra "hump" on the insides of the landing gear fairings.  So at the last minute they added the hump by making the wing root fairing thinner.  Take a look.  I had to fill mine with putty and rebuild the "hump".

I'll concur with what Mark said...

Hi Mark,

That's a beauty for sure!  I also want to do one with the medium green dapples around the wings and stabilizers.  Although I have not built up any 1/48 Hasegawa kits, I feel that they captured the external shape better than anyone else.  Anything else, I can live with.  I have to say that I like the AMT kits though as they are not bad and are simple in design.

Hasegawa's old 1/72 kit is still the best Kittyhawk and their new 1/32 is the best too in that scale...

Here's some pics of my slow progress.
It's hard to see it but there is Aves Apoxie putty serving to blend between the plastic and resin.
The darker gray is Tamiya putty which also has very little shrinkage and I'm beginning to prefer it over the Squadron putty.
As you can see, I need to full the "scallops" like Mark did.
This is the AMT P-40F kit.  Mr. Dills insists his plane is a P-40F but I think it might be a P-40L due to that extra canopy bracing in the photo.
However, it is for him so I will build it as a short tail "F"!

Hi Mark,

I got mine at the IPMS nationals in 2005 from Aves display table!
Good news is it's readily available from amazon now.
They even have white (mine is natural color).
I'll put a picture in my P-40F thread so you can see how well it sands and files with plastic and resin joints.

Hey Mark, nice photos!
Yeah that cowl flap actuator handle on the right cockpit wouldn't be there for an "L" because they had the electrically operated ones.  No big deal.  How many people would even know that?!  Smiley

That resin nose looks great on the Mauve/Eduard kit.  I used Aves Apoxie to fill the gaps and it sands up really nice and does not shrink.

Thanks for the help, Mark!

I agree with you that the photograph indicates a hint of a two tone scheme because the typical pattern areas are somewhat visible.
It's interesting that there is so little contrast between the two colors though.
He insisted that it was not olive drab.  Also he didn't agree to the earth and mid stone one either.

I asked him to go to the paint department at Home Depot.
He picked out Glidden "Oak Alley" which looks a lot like earth brown.  I'll probably use a faded Dark Earth with lots of weathering.

Hi all,

I met Charles Dills online a few years ago and promised to build a model of his Warhawk.
It has taken me years to get going on this project (I have small kids).
There is an article with his comments on the main site here that you all can read.

This is the Warhawk I'm trying to build.
He says it is not olive drab but a dusty gray color.  I'm needing help on this topic.

Here's my AMT P-40F with the replacement nose.  It's a nice kit and a nice price too!

Hey Mark,

Thanks for sharing pics.   I have a P-40F in progress from AmTech.
I'll check into those "scallops" and see if I need to fill them.
I have the Ultracast flared exhausts.  It caused me to have to grind out very carefully the exhaust area.  I used a dremel with a tiny, round detailer so I wouldn't mess up the outer cowling.
Then I plan to use Apoxie to pack down in the holes and attach the stubs.  It has enough working time to let me do this.  That's the plan anyway....

I like the Hasegawa kits.
This should be fun.

Krystian,

You are a very skilled model maker.
Also, your photography is excellent.
These could be in a book!

Thanks for sharing with us.
