316  P-40 Warhawk Forums / P-40 Models / Re: Three of my P-40 models on: March 26, 2009, 12:36:58 AM
Thanks much, guys.

Yeah, on the P-40N I took a hole punch to some very thin sheet styrene.  It was just blind luck that a hole puncher for paper happens to be the perfect size for a P-40 wheel cover in 1/72 scale!!!!  Then I used a hobby knife to carve the spokes.  Actually, there are some aftermarket resin wheels available now.  I also had to widen the wheels because the Hasegawa ones are too skinny.

An interesting note about the P-40E at the bottom, Creswell's plane.  I found out that the nice four flag nose art is only on the port side of his plane and there was some other flag on the starboard side which you see in the photo above with the four flags.  The Microscale decal sheet got it wrong and I found out like 15 years later.  Oh well, it's still a nice looking P-40E in that British dark earth and green.

Here is a photo of the 1/48 P-40E by Otaki I built back in '87.
It has a reshaped spinner and prop blades from a Monogram P-38!

This is the little 1/72 P-40N from Hasegawa (a really nice kit).
I carved the spoked wheel covers myself.  Now my eyes are getting bad so that was definitely for the younger me!

Another 1/72 Hasegawa, this time P-40E.  I made the exhausts myself and vacuformed the canopy too.
There is a tiny brake line made of monofilament thread too.

Looks great, New Guy!
I love models too but don't have a lot of spare time right now due to small kids.
Someday I will put out more models!

I've seen the movie and it's not bad.
The P-40 attack scene is right at the beginning of the film.
The shots are generally quick and from a distance.
However, it is so nice to see the Warhawk getting some screen time again ( and really blowing the heck out of the Germans) !!!!

I saw another preview last night on TV.
There was another short glimpse of a P-40 with guns blazing in the commercial.
It appeared to be a shark-mouth paint scheme, perhaps like 112 Squadron RAF.

I will try to find it on youtube or somewhere and post the link...

I'm sad I missed this.
Those books are some of my favorites.

There is a place in the US that is building P-40s from the ground up.
It's called Warhawks, Inc.

The owner has a young man in his twenties working full time on this.  Truly my dream job!
The young man's last name is Hokuf.  He has some videos on youtube under this name.  You could contact him out there.
It takes him about three years to build a new P-40.

I saw the ads for the new Tom Cruise film, Valkyrie, and I saw a short bit obviously from North Africa.
The planes had red spinners... so I did a little hunting and discovered that there were two P-40s used in the filming of the N. Africa scenes!
Steve Hinton and his brother, John, did the flying out in California.

I hope the scenes are good ones!
